Solar water heating systems use free heat from the sun to warm domestic
hot water. A conventional boiler or immersion heater is then used to increase
the water temperature, or to provide hot water when solar energy is unavailable.
Even on a cold but sunny day your water can be partially heated through the
use of solar panels.
A solar water heating system can provide about a third of your hot water needs,
reducing your water heating bill by between £50 and £85 per year. It will also
save up to 580kg of CO2 emissions, depending on what fuel you will be replacing. Combine this with current Government incentives and you could be looking at a return in excess of £300 per annum. Only MCS accredited companies are able to unlock this revenue stream.
A grant of £300 is available for domestic customers. This is known as the Renewable Heat Premium payment. A new incentive scheme will be launched in the summer of 2013, called the Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme. This is designed to further encourage the use of renewable heat in the UK. Properties with solar thermal panels will be eligible for payments for every kW of heat generated.
